School Board wants to shut down school!!!

17 years 6 months ago #131514 by momofbobcats
We went through this 4 years ago. The closure for us was due to low numbers. Our solution was to change to a charter school. (We went from 59 students to our current 114 students due to this change - we have 120 registered for next school year.) This was done with our districts support and approval. It was actually our district superintendant who arranged for our parents to meet with one of the state ODE people for us to get information on charter schools. I don't know how supportive your district would be with your situation. You might want to contact the ODE in your state for more info as well as any charter schools in your area/state.

Does your school board hold regular meetings? Find out when the next meeting is, gather a group of concerned(but reasonable) parents and attend. They should have a segment of the meeting for public input(they may restrict it to items on the agenda, you'll have to check that out). When that public time comes up have a designated parent step forward and state that your group is here to find out information and details on the proposed move. Voice your general concerns and opinions, then see what they say. They may refuse to respond. You could then request to have that item put on the agenda of the next meeting or ask for a special meeting to discuss that topic and ask for a time for public input. Again you will have to check into the board policy on such requests.

When our district was going through some major changes in the number of buildings, the school board held several informational meetings during which community members could ask questions and speak on the matter. While there were still people who had very negative feelings, those meetings did a lot to boost support and understanding of the decisions the board was making. Keeping the lines of communication open is so important when dealing with sensitive issues like this.

Another thing to remember is that your school board members are elected officials. If your parents don't like the way things are being run, then they need to express that in the next election by ousting the current board and getting people in office who are willing to communicate and listen to the members of the community.

why was the building deemed unfit for small children? What grade level is your school? Alot of times these things happen for alot of reasons and you will find that your school board is on line with it, they get to make the decision in the long run...where is the financial aspects in this, mandated test grades in this, stuff like that. I guess what reasons are they giving?

Please help!!! There is massive talk about our school board shutting down our school. It would make our school into an early childhood development center, and transfer our children to a different elementary school. Parents are very upset, me included. One reason they say it is necessary is because where another school's preschool and kindergarten children are located, the building has been deemed unfit for small children. Yet, that is the same building where they want to put South Irvine's children. Also rumors that this change would benefit the superintendent's wife in her current school position as Early Childhood Devel. Coordinator. Things are being leaked to parents slowly, but so far the only response we get from the school board and our own principal is that nothing has been made official yet. We don't even have the support of our own school board member. Is there anything we can do to stop this? We are located in KY, not sure if there is anything legally we can do. HELP OUR CHILDREN IF YOU CAN!!!
