a parents right to assist on school grounds sounds like its something the SCHOOL (or maybe superintendent and BOE) and not PTO, has jurisdiction over.

and having the principal inform the board of the PTO, means what? surely not for the PTO to take a decision i hope.

if so, here is a teachable moment. everyone has rights, each citizen and each parent (those on probation, and those not).

it goes both ways. what info did the principal share, with whom, for what reason, and was it right to do so.

there is much more to this story no doubt, but lots to learn for all parents of that school, about their manangement.

I guess this is why background checks are done. I agree with the other posters - if the conviction doesn't affect PTO work or working with children then she not only deserves a chance but is entitled to it. She's already been tried, judged, convicted and punished. Why does it need to go any further than that?

I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to raise yourself back up from the bottom - especially without a few helping hands along the way.

although this may not be your favorite mother in the world she does have the right to be involved in her child's education. If your district is already allowing her in the building then there is not much you can do. I am guessing the charges arent abuse related or your district would have their hands in this. if it is related to money or theft then put all of the safe guards, not alone with money, not in charge of fundraising, things like that. Sad thing is there are people in schools all over the place with records we may not know about...can you say what the charges are realted to then and maybe we can give you more insight.

As long as her probation does not prohitbit her from being around kids then I would not see a problem with her volunteering. I know we all have to have background checks BUT where we live they are only for our county. I guess since you already know what she is on probation for, then you and the principal can make it more of a "judgement" call. That way you have covered all of yourselves. But at least it it will be based on fact not rumor. Difficult situation. Best of luck!

if the mom has resigned to the president, then what is your concern at this point, since she is no longer be on the leadership team?

Hi, I just found out one of our PTO is on probation. She still has 2 more years on probation. Has this happened to anyone else?

I am not sure what we are suppose to do now?

Our principal is the one who brought it to our attention, the PTO board.

The mom has denied all of the charges. She doesn't know we have seen the mug shot and report.

Any suggestion?

What are we required by law to do?

The mom has resigned in person to the president.
