but finally ended up just copying the character on the cover from a book

The pamplet sounds wonderful, but....you might run into copyright laws, unless you asked permission to use the charcter. I realize that you're not selling this item, so no $$ is being handled, but you are using a trademark and that could cause your group a lot of headaches.

I would contact the publisher of the "Dummy" books and make sure that it is OK.
