Does your school use an e-mail list?

Hi! We started one just this year. About 1/2 the people in our school signed up for it. It is working really well. Our Principal loves it and uses it himself to put out reminders. He loves it so much I think he uses it more then the PTO does. Because not everyone is subscribed to the list we only use it to send out reminders for anything and everything and we also use it to seek volunteers if we are short handed for something. I know it works because people do respond as well as the people that say "OMG thank god you sent that or I totally would have forgotten".

Anyhow, when I started to put it together I did a search for all the free mailing list services I could find (I originaly was going to use Yahoo).
In the end I decided to go with Google Groups
groups-beta.google.com
I made the decision based on which one I thought was the most idiot proof. It also allows you to add people yourself so that they do not have to get themselves added to the mailing list. You can submit people to the list in batches if you like.

I would like to set up an e-mail list for the school. Do any of you do that? Can I use Yahoo groups for that or would parents have to go to the site and sign up for it? I have 2/3 of the addresses already. What kind of info do you send out and can you tell if people are reading it? I think it would be a great way to send out info about upcoming events.

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Shelly
