Our School does a Superintendent's Award for all A's and a Principal's Award for A's and B's. I think it is 3rd grade till 6th grade. After report cards go home, The Principal will announce the names of the students and they will receive a certificate to take home.
Our school (K-5) recognizes honor roll for 4th and 5th grades at morning assembly and also in the county newspaper. The grading scale in my state is more difficult than most. In elementary school the lowest A grade is 92....in middle school the lowest A grade is 94 and in high school, I believe it is 95. Obviously, "everyone" is not going to be on the honor roll. And even if each child in the school made the honor roll, would that make it any less of an accomplishment?? I believe that rather than not acknowledge honor roll in elementary school because most kids (or all) in a school may acheive it, it should definitely be given recognition, because it is an honor.
We used to have a student of the week. The children's first name and last intial was put on our school sign. Everyone got to have their name just about everyone got to have their name up there at one pt. or another.
We have Success Celebrations every Friday to celebrate attendance and acadmics. Teacher are responsible for the academic certifs that are given out. Attendence prizes are given by a drawing, each day a child comes to school his/her name gets put in the hat. The 100 Lady does this, she is wildly popular. Also at the end of each semester big prizes are given for academics and attendance by drawings. There a couple of kids that do get upset but the majority says maybe next time or I'll try harder.
In our elementary school, we have "Student of the Month" for each class each month. The students are recognized at the following month's PTA meeting and called up one by one up front for recognition. The PTA provides each child with a folder printed with the school name/logo, a bumper sticker and a bookmark or pin. Then they are given juice and cookies. It makes the kids feel special for their accomplishments during the month and they love to see their parents' faces when they are recognized.
Our school does awards every 9 weeks for each grade level. The Academic Achiever is basically your honor roll students. We also have Homework Hero, Attendance Award, Good Citizen, Science Scholar, Early Birder (gets to school early), Master of Math, Handwriting, Really Into Reading, Happy Attitude, all sorts of things. Each child receives two awards. The assemblies are in the am and parents are invited and encouraged to attend. We always have a good turnout and the kids are excited to see what they have earned. I really believe in awarding each child for what they do best and this really provides each of them encouragement.

Our school (k3-8) has an honor roll starting in 5th grade. There is the all-A honor roll and the A-B honor roll. They are recognized quarterly at our chapel service.
