That's a super idea - and to invite teachers to come down and chat with the parents - that's inspiring. Do you put any reminders on the teachers lounge to remind them the the parent - teacher coffee get-together is the next day or what!
This would be a great idea for more Newbie Presidents to bring in for the new school year as a positive outreach to both parents and teachers.

Well I am glad that I am not the only person who has had this experince and I am sure that I will not be the last. Sure hope that next year we will have a lot more excitement with even more positive changes.
If any of you have any other great ideas on how to motiate what seems to be the unmotivatable (not sure if thats a real word) I am desperately seeking all advice.
I have been in your place. I moved from a town in northern ca where almost everyparent was a member of the pta and at meetings you would have not less then 50 parents each month. I have since moved even more north to a town of 5100.I felt that I had some new ideas and have gotten some good feed back .I did send out a survey but i also let parents know who i was and what i was hoping to accomp;lish in the school year using our newsletter. We also started to have a parent and teacher coffee morning each tuesday . We serve free coffee for a hour and have volunteers bring something to much on. We have had more teachers come in and talk to us and have had parents who have a hard time making our meetings come in and catch up on what is coming up.we also have sign up sheets for any event that is coming up.It cost us less then 20 a month. Its a great way to make parents feel comfortable.Good luck and keep up the good work.Don't give up the kids need you more then you know.
Thanks for the Tip. We hold family together nights off and on throughtout the school year, not for profit, just to promote togetherness with in our school. We do have a some up coming.
How about a family picnic sponsored by the PTO? It may help to get everyone together at a very informal, non-meeting, event so they can get to know each other again. Then you can move through the crowd and introduce yourself, chat with parents about what they want in their school and in their PTO. Have a meeting one week later(make sure you promote this at the picnic)to discuss everything about the PTO. I'll bet you will get more people to attend and maybe spark some interest in the PTO again.
This has been my first year as "president" of a PTA in a small rural town in CA. This is quite different from the last PTA I was involved with in WA where parents seemed really interested in helping to assist with their childs education.
Now that I have seen how things have worked in the past I would like to make some changes. Many parents comment about all of the negative things that have happened in the past. Our school also has a new Prinipal.
Our PTA had a meeting just over a month ago where only my self and the treasure showed up!
We were not able to conduct any business.
I am considering sending home a letter with a survey. It seems that most of our reliable people are burning out beacuse we can not find volunteers to assist with calling and asking, and our reliable volunteers, I really thank them always are the ones to come through.
Teachers and parents complain about all of the fundrasiers and many of our teachers are not even members.
Unsure of what to do and how to get the support back that this PTA has lost of the years.
