We handed out a survey at registration this year. We asked everything from "Do you regularly volunteer in the classroom or at school events?" to whether they liked the fundraising programs we use. It was a very simple layout using the "agree, mostly agree, disagree" format and a 1-10 rating scale on one question we asked about what kind of family night activities people would like to see. One tip-don't expect a lot of responses. Even though we handed them out at registration and encouraged parents to fill them out at the time, we still only got about 5% back. I guess that is pretty typical for surveys. If you would like a copy of our survey just e-mail me and I can send it to you.
One other thing-I don't know how frequently you have meetings or how many people attend but you could have a "brainstorming" meeting where you discuss each program and look for ways to improve it. You can also use this as an opportunity to get some of your ideas out there. Just don't use the words "I think..." Preface your ideas instead with "What about..." It sounds less like you're trying to run the show and more like this amazing idea just came to you!!! (I learned this trick in my years in retail management-it made people feel more like they were part of the decision making--not something they taught in my college classes!)
