Lisa - if your group is separate from PTO - say a "Volunteer Coordinator Team" perhaps put out a flyer to the teachers with the info on what you are planning to accomplish. Be very clear about who they should contact on the form and say something along the lines of "The VCT looks forward to helping you - please contact _____ at ________ and let us know how we can do that. This is a separate group from the PTO as they are involved in many other worthwhile projects for the school."

Coug - sounds like your up to a budget issue and revisiting your bylaws to see if an expenditure can be brought before the general membership for a vote. I still don't like the idea of having the principal being one of the signatories on checks thus having the ultimate veto power on any expenditure.

The folders or containers for individual teachers is a great idea! At our school, some of the teachers have an abundance of volunteers while others may not have any. This would be a great way to give all of the teachers the help that they need.

I AM SO JEALOUS! We just had our first board meeting of the school year and tried to get our principal to let us use some of the money for the building of a volunteer room and the essentails for our use (small copier, die cutter, paper cutter, etc), but every time we asked for the money, they dodged it saying we needed it in different areas. Our PTO requires principal signatures on checks and it seems they have decided where the money is going. Our current board has decided we are fed up with all the new playground equipment (our major fundraisers for the past 5 years have gone to this). Many of our volunteers would love to have a room like this, especially with an area for their smaller children to play. It would be a lot more convenient than a drop off point in classrooms, library, office and the like. We'd get to work without the hassles of kids tapping on our shoulders, kids screaming, running, etc in the hall and it would be much easier to find our volunteers. (Our school refuses to page any volunteers in the building). Enjoy the rooms!
