C.Brooks,
Is it a school or parent group or both policy that requires the background checks?
Thanks

For anyont to come in our school and help they must first have a background check. The school sends in the papers to the police dept. Then we get a list who we can call to help.

mum, ours goes to the board and then is sent to the principal. The principal has a right to decide if that person should volunteer. She/he informs the volunteer and that is as far as it goes. If a person doesn't show up for meetings, I assume that person has had a mind or something has come up.

I asked the principal about that one time. I do get a statement back from where I was 19 and I didn't have updated tags on my car. I didn't know it, it was taken care of. Bad checks are taken into consideration if that person is handling money, and of course violent offenses are prohibited.

Sort of hijacking this thread at this point, but for those of you who do these background checks, what is your policy if anything negative comes out of them? No matter how bad it is, do you not let the person work/volunteer at all?

Try a google search with the words New York State Criminal Record Check and also, New York State Child Abuse History Clearance. I had to get both of these to apply for a job in our school district here in PA. With your screen name as NYCparent, I'm assuming that's your state!

I was able to download the applications from the internet, fill them out, send them in snail mail and had both clearances back in 3 weeks. The cost was about $5.00 each. Most clearances are actually done by ADP, a company based in Denver, Colorado. Hope this helps.
