20 years 2 months ago #99942 by chic*mom
Just to update you all.... I went to the first meeting & was very good, I only spoke when the prez asked me a question... She is still changing everything I did & that is hard.

She has come to me with a few questions about how to run things. But for the most part I know she wants me to lay low & let her be in charge... I have been volunteering in other ways, but I do still miss the PTO & being the president... Thanks for all your supp ort

I want to thank everyone for the info. I am in an interesting position (I think) I am the person that came up with the idea of creating the first (to our knolage) Fully Virtual PTO.

I have worked with a small group of family members from our internet charter school to work out the by laws mission statement, Articles of incorperation, and all the other fun stuff that goes with creating a PTO.

Our very first election will be on Sept 20 - 25 (internet voting) and I will be running unaposed from the looks of it. So I will be the first Prez cool.

To be honest there is a part of me that is ready to hand over the reigns now that the initial stuff is done but some of the members have told me tough!! lol

We put a term limit in our by laws of 4 years so June 2008 I am "free" lol. There is a part of me that is already looking at that far off date with regrets. Heck there is a part of me that is looking at Oct 1 with regret (when elected officials will take office)

until now I have been the "tiller" of the committee. Our PTO idea has for the most part come from my vision with input from others. On Oct 1 our PTO will be a real living breathing orginization which will be guided by an elected/apointed Board and I will not have total control any more.

I don't mean to sound like I am a control freak or somthing because I am not. I guess bottom line is a am scared that our formation committee forgot somthing critical (well actualy it will be my fault because I was the chair of the committee) I am sorry to be rambleing about this, I am sounding like an idiot. I just want this to work so bad that sometimes it almost drives me crazy. Just imagin how I will be when my time comes to step down lol.

Thanks for letting me babble.

In our school, it was the normal progression of the PTO President to join the School Council as a full member.

Have you considered talking to the principal to see what other ways they can use your expertise--maybe to help with development, research grants, or help out with fundraising? Our school didn't have a development director, which was sorely needed at the school--someone who could write a press release, call the media for events, and plan other events for the school.

Good luck. I'm going through the same withdrawals after moving away from my old school!

I took a break after my year of being president and a surprise baby #5!

Well we DID advocate finding new activities to keep you busy. I personally went for attending a monthly professional organization for which I hadn't had time.

But I suppose Baby #5 and 18 more years of being a room parent would be another way to go....
;)

(Kidding aside, MYKIDMOM, you are a treasure and an asset to this Forum)

I have to laugh because I also vented to my husband and I guess that's how I managed to "let it all out". It was a tough month or two for him for sure. It is very hard to see the things you worked very hard at put by the wayside. Makes you definitely feel like you were unappreciated too. (But all of us know the hard work it takes and the sacrifices you go through to do your job. We have been there and done that.) Like JHB, changes are made on things that don't seem to really need change. Change for the sake of change is really not great, especially if what they are changing is already a good thing. But on the other side I came in with lots of new things as well. Surveys, newsletters, websites, walkathons and lots of newspaper coverage for publicity and more ommunication then there ever was to name a few. I have to think that is part of the process, though.

With my previous post and the reference I made to the CD I made, who knows if they will ever look at it? But at least I know I passed the information on and did not leave the board without thr proper information to proceed. (Our board has 3 new members out of a board of 5)Hopefully they will take a look at it.

In closing, when you walk the walk you know what was involved and all of us who have been officers and have walked the walk have that commonality.

SHAME ON YOU!! You have a life and it's a great one!! I took a break after my year of being president and a surprise baby #5! It was a tough year but I soon found my niche with the new President. This year is my second year back as secretary and while I had a love hate thoughts of my year off, I'm looking forward to another one soon!

You've gotten some great advise (JHB you are so awsome!), you can do this and the best part, we'll still have ya here! No meeting/appt. required! ;)
