Insurance?

There's a good general article on insurance in the PTO Today archives here:
www.ptotoday.com/0801insurance.html

If you're a separate corporation (or unincorporated association), I would be willing to bet big $$$ that there's no way your school district policy would cover your activities, even if they are held at school. If you're not separate, I would sit down with the district's insurance people, run through some specific examples with them of each of the types of coverage needed (as per those listed in the article), and get it in writing if they say you are covered for those types of situations.

This may seem like a stupid post to some of you, but we don't have any insurance. This is my second year on the PTO board (also as prez) so I am pretty new to this.

Our pricinple says' we dont need it, and the PTO has not had it for the past 23 years (since the school was opened).

A couple questions:
- How do we know if we need it and what would it be used for?
- The principle says were covered under the school policy since everything we do is at school. Is this true?

I'd hate to see something happen because we did not know any better. Any advise on this topic is more than greatly appreciated (as always!)
