If you build a good relationship with only one staff person, make it the school secretar(ies). They can make/break your ability to get things done.
Memorize the code to the xerox machine.
Keep an second copy of the school directory in your car.
Sign in and put on a nametag every time you enter the building, no matter if you're there every day. You shouldn't appear to be "above" the rules that apply to everyone else.
Get active on this forum.
Read every issue of PTOToday cover to cover.
Don't micromanage the committees.
Introduce yourself at every meeting. Don't assume every parent knows who you are.
Expect the Best but prepare for the worst.
You can't make everyone happy unless you are spiking the refreshments with Prozac.
Always look like you're having fun, even if you aren't. (No one wants to be involved in something bad)
Keep your own stash of Prozac, for when you aren't having fun!
Remember that you are good enough, strong enough and gosh darnit, people like you!
Everything can't be perfect but it can be close.
I am looking to print out a little "tip" sheet for our soon to be newly elected officers. I want it to be on the humorous side but also, with some real good advice regarding what they will be dealing with in the coming year. I know there are a lot of you out there who have "walked the walk..." and have some good "20-20 hindsight...if I only knew then what I know now" helpful tidbits! I think it would be a great thing to give to all our "replacements".
I know for me, having walked the walk now for a number of years, I just recently wrote a letter of thanks to our past president who was on our board for 8+ years. I had no idea the mountains and stumbling blocks that she had to face on a daily basis and I wanted her to know that I really applaud her past achievements. ( sorry about all the spacing problems as I learn how to use the bold codes....)
I just thought a little humorous insight might be nice for them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
