2kids- I sent you some stuff by email. Hope it helps. If you always remember that the money belongs to the group--not to you, the officers, or the principal, then you'll have the perspective to treat it with the proper respect. If your PTO creates an annual budget, then you'll be free of the personal burden of approving/denying individual spending requests. And if you apply some common sense financial controls (even though it make mean "paperwork"!), you'll be able to back up any transaction. Good luck! It's not so bad as it may seem - but don't tell everyone else or they will all be beating your door down to volunteer to be Treasurer next year!

Thanks for the kind words. It's great that technology and our friends at PTOToday have made it so easy for us to help one another. I thank JHB for her help to me, too.

Are you starting a new organization or just reactivating an existing one? If you are just reactivating, you probably already have a tax ID number ("EIN"). When you say "change the bank info," do you just mean changing the signatories? Or are you actually opening a new account? To open a new account, the bank is going to require that you have an EIN.

If you click on "useful resources" to the left (under PTO basics), you'll find lots of forms and other info there; you might want to take a look.

Critter is the expert here she helped me tremendously when I inherited our 'treasurer' duties this summer. I'm sure she'll post when she gets a chance. She's a whiz. She provided forms (which are available on this website) and tips to help me get started.

Hi

I need help!! I'm new to the office of treasurer and I'm sure what to do. We haven't had a PTO in about 2 yrs. I know that we have to change the name of our organization and change the bank info. My question is what else do I need to do? How do I go about getting a new tax #?, or do I even need one? Any info anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
