As far as grants, we've applied for some and are awaiting word, but in most cases it would be that we would still be "administering" the money to the individual teaching. And a volunteer would be a great idea - it's just hard to find someone whose willing (and capable - since it's Spanish).
And, yes, there are MANY issues to consider. And the ones you have mentioned do cause me concern. I guess we could go before the board again and ask them to reconsider paying this person for us. They may have not felt like we would be able to raise the money necessary and didn't want to be locked into paying a person thru their payroll. But now that we have a majority of the funding in hand, maybe they WOULD consider adding this person to the payroll...
Stacy.. It sounds nice and all but you are now becoming the employer of this employee!!
Have you though about the health insurance, workmens comp. what if she is hurt on the job? Also what about her being a member of the classified or teachers union they often ask for a raise due to cost of living expences. There are so many things that your group may not have though of.
Yes you do not want this important job cut! But are you really prepared to handle all the issues & costs involved?? The district board wants you to totally cover the hiring, paying etc.. of this position because they know all the different costs involved in being an employer.
I would highly suggest you either donate the money to the district so she can be on their pay roll or find volunteers...
Sorry to sound so glum.. but you guys need to look at the big picture!!
I totally agree. However, we have gone before the school board to object to losing this whole program. They gave us the go-ahead to fund it ourselves, however, they also told us they want us to take care of the hiring, paying, etc. So, we are on our own, unfortunately....
Thanks for the suggestion, though..

Never did this before. But we are going to pay for substitutes for a day or so for something else. I envisioned us just reimbursing the school system for their costs. I would think it would be easier to do this and it would be easier to attract an employee. How @ the school put her/him on payroll and you reimburse?
We have a situation that I wonder if anyone else has encountered. Our elementary was different than most of the other public schools around us as we offer Spanish to our kids starting in kindergarten on a weekly basis. Because of budget cuts, we are losing our Spanish teacher/program. The PTO is raising funds to "Save our Spanish." We are hoping to raise enough this summer that we can pay for a teacher to come in and continue the program for the 03-04 school year. My question is - Can we pay her as a Contract Laborer? That seems like it would cut the paperwork down. Simply pay her then issue a 1099 at yearend. I'm hoping we won't have to pay as an employee and do payroll stuff. Has anyone ever done anything like this? Thanks so much for your help...
