Secretary/Treasurer

I agree with Critter- having a good, reliable treasurer is essential, and it would be much easier to find a secretary than a treasurer. The only slots we ever worry about filling are president and treasurer- any other position can be filled by talking someone into it if you have to. If you choose to be treasurer, say you'll only do one position and eventually the vacancy will be filled.

Our bylaws state that an officer can only hold one position at a time.

I've been both treasurer and secretary and I think secretary is an easier job in many ways. More people are intimidated by handling money than by writing minutes. Secretary is a great way for someone to get involved in the innner workings of the PTO without a huge workload. Could you more easily recruit someone else to be secretary and then you don't need to take on two jobs? I can't imagine trying to do both at the same time!

As far as the fundraising project goes - maybe you could recruit someone to be "event treasurer" just for that project so you aren't handling the money on both sides. Find an assistant who would be willing to count the money, prepare the deposits and take them to the bank. You just need the control forms back to show who paid what and how much. The assistant's job would only last for a few weeks and you could still be the overall project chair without a conflict. Plus you'll get someone else involved who might prove capable of being treasurer NEXT year... Good luck! Don't try to do it all - we should all be leary of burnout!

The secretary and Treasurer positions won't be elected until next school term, however our current treasurer has already said she does not want to do it again next year and no one else has come forward offering. So now they are thinking of combining the positions of secretary and treasurer into one for me to do next school year. (Remember we don't elect until next term but they say that I'm the only one organized enough to do both and keep us smooth sailing for another year.) I'm not sure how this would work. although I am there all the time as it is, I'm not sure that the two positions should be combined especially since I'm already committed to chairing the fall fundraiser and feel that the treasurer should really not chair any event as it would be a conflict to some extent. Any comments or advice? Also I'm a bit concerned that people will think I'm taking over as I've chaired several events already this year, plus became secretary mid stream and several other things that I have done simply because other's didn't have time or the know how to do them. Although I'm told that I make things easier I don't want to come off as a control freak or anything. Thanks for any advice on the issue.
