I'm going to sound harsh on this and I do understand your internal conflict, but I think you only have two options:
1. You or he pay back all $$ immediately; or...
2. Go to board and authorities.
The option you seem to be leaning toward ("pay back in a month AND your relative doesn't get in trouble") doesn't work for me. At all. It's not your money; it's not even the Board's money.
You (as a family member) have the right/desire to give this person the benefit of the dounbt and to try and help him. However, the board doesn't share that. If you think this person should stay out of trouble (and he can't pay it back immediately!), then I'd say you personally have to cover the loss in the meantime.
As a board member, I'd have no desire (absolutely zero) to give someone who took the hard-earned money time and flexibility in paying it back.
A terrible reminder of why no member, no matter who or what position they hold, should take PTO/PTA funds home. Not even for an hour. Hope it all works out for you in the end.
A tough situation and to throw a family member into it makes it tougher!
Just a thought, would he be willing to sign something to the effect he will pay back the cash so you have something on your side to show the Board? Your .... (yeah that) and your reputation is on the line here, I hope this person understands that. I am hoping the Board is willing and able to understand your situation...I wish the best of luck...
I was going to handle this on my own, but i see you all seem to give excellent advice. I am the president of our pto. our treasurer had to hand me her resposibilities for a few months due to surgery. Everything was going along smoothly until just last month. We had a small fundraiser and our Christmas Store. I had the money and the deposit slip in my file cabinet at home. The day I went to get it to take to deposit I found it missing. I was sick. I thought to see if i moved it. I knew I had not. Then I began thinking, one of my in-laws babysat for me one evening so I could go Christmas shopping. I hated to accuse anybody but... I ask the peron and at first he denied it, then he admitted it. I told him I expected it immediately. He had already used it. I told him he had to pay it back and he has agreed. NOW how do I handle this with the board. I don't want him to get in trouble, since I am the one responsible for the money. Our tresurer is feeling better and is ready to assime her duties. He has promised to pay the full amount back by Feb. 15. Help I really respect all the board members and feel like such a failure for letting this happen. PLEASE any advice would be greatly appreciated. I guess I just don't want to lose their respect. It has already been a rough year and this is NOT helping my nerves at all. Thanks in advance for you suggestions.
