Pricipal too rigid! What to do?

Go through this site with a fine tooth comb. Write down a list of things that other PTO's have done for their schools. Show your principal what he/she could have. Our PTO funded a complete computer lab w/ software ($30,500.00), purchased the Accelerated Reading Program for our school library ($10K), we fund Red Ribbon Week ($700.00), provide academic awards ($1000.00), we bring special events like Pioneer Living ($1000.00), Artist In Residence ($3200.00 with the assistance of a grant from the Arizona Commission On The Arts, a grant written by a PTO member), etc. Add playgrounds, field trips, and the like. I know that everyone will add to this post with things their PTO's have done or are doing. Show him/her what the school is missing by not utilizing your group. Explain that in order to fund some of the bigger things, you need to use imagination and creativity. Ask him/her what suggestions he/she might have that will help you achieve your school goals. Leave the article from the current PTO today on his/her desk, open to the article about partnering.

Good Luck!

Pricipal too rigid! What to do? was created by <candocrew>
Im a new PTO Officer and am trying to get a very weak PTO up and going. Im begining to feel the weight of discouragment because our Pricipal makes us jump through hoops to do anything. she wont alow to do so many things its killing the creativity in our group. She has what he considers rational concerns and turns us down.
Has anyone delt with this before?
Ive never heard of so much red tape before.

She shot down our fundraiser without discusion because she said there was not enough time to plan.(Id already contacted many people and had plenty of time.) Ive been told by past officers that she would not alow pto to sell popcorn after school because of the choking hazard.
Is this typical for anyone else?
We arent alowed to sell home baked goods after school. (store brand only)
This is just the surface list.
What liability does the school have concerning freak accidents.
Im new at this and I dont know how to take all of it.
I did read that article about partnering with your principal and it sounds great but ours seems so matter of fact about everything I cant figure out how to proceed.
I know I wont last long under these circumstances unless I can figure out what room we have to operate. We do the same stuff every year because no one wants to brainstorm and have all their ideas shot down.
Sorry Im alittle frustrated.
