To Resign or Not To Resign?

Here's the problem...I'm the prez of our PTO and have been for the last year. Over the summer we came across a lot of suspicious information that looks like the former prez. was embezzeling thousands of dollars. We're talking forged checks, remimbursed checks, etc. Anyway, we've gone to the Superintendent, and to the prez. of our school board. Both state that the PTO is a "volunteer" organization and that the school is a seperate entity from the PTO. Therefore, they cannot give us direction or advise or support as to how we should handle this situation. We've been dealing with this since May and still no support. I've drafted a resignation letter but my officers are trying to convince me not to resign because then the former prez. would still win and nothing would be accomplished. But if I don't resign then I feel I'm part of an organization that has no support from the school in which we serve. Any suggestions?? P.S. The school's attorney did suggest we take everything over to the District Attorney however, our superintendent and school board prez. made mention that they would like to see if we could handle this out of the legal system. In other words, keep quiet!
