Thank You, Thank You, Thank you! Boy, I love this web site! Just when you think you're all alone on something......
It feels really good just to know you're not completely out in left field sometimes! I appreciate all the replies very much. I will bring this up at our next meeting and we will see which way we want to go on it. This discussion forum is a great idea, being able to draw from anothers experience who has been in a similar situation is invaluable!

Go Get Em IMovePeople! Tell em how you really feel...lol

And know that I agree with you!

PTO's are to provide things for THE BENEFIT OF THE CHILDREN. It is to HELP assist teachers. It is to provide support outlets, and I don't mean financial support! Bonuses are something an employer gives an employee. PTO's traditionally do not employ teachers (I know I know... some provide "A" teacher for certain extra-curricular studies, but 99% of PTO's do not practice this). PTO's traditionally fund school programs and events that directly affect either the school (say a new Risograph for example) or the children (say new playground equiptment). PTO's traditionally do a small gift for staff members at Christmas, but this would fall under rules of gift giving (i.e. no one should EXPECT a gift). Let's put it this way: There was an entire posting a couple weeks back about how much should be spent on Teacher Appreciation Week. Our school has 85 or so staff members and we spent less than $500 for all 85 people to receive very cool T-shirts and a Fruit Bar, Salad Bar and Dessert Bar. Less than $6.00 per staff member. I guess we could have given them the $5.88 as a bonus...rotflol...

Spend it on field trips, assemblies, Red Ribbon Week, Pioneer Days, The Animal Band, The Earth Ball, playground equiptment, your school library, your school computer lab, your school music program, whatever turns your CHILDREN on!

Just my opionion, but i am with imovepeople. Heck no i do not think the PTO should be asked to provide bonus. A gift at christmas perhaps, but the bonus should be planned into the budget!

Thanks for the reply! The person who informed last years PTO of this was the former headmaster(replaced in April).

Until I got to the "private" school part I was all ready to say "not just no but . . . ." you all know what I was going to say and I still say no. Bonuses should be budgeted for by the school's financial people. A bonus is a bonus - and not something to be expected, or it may as well just be part of your salary. I could go on and on and on - NO. And by the way - care to share with us who it was that told you that Christmas Bonus' were the responsibility of PTO? Was it, by chance, a teacher? One final comment - see all the posts from people trying to get the T involved in P"T"O - if my PTO was paying Christmas Bonus every teacher would be at every meeting and doing an awful lot of volunteering at the events, as well. O.K. - I promise, I'm done now!

Hi all! This is my first time to visit this site. This is great! What a wealth of information! Speaking of a wealth of information, I would like to get some! I am a newly elected Vice President of a relatively new PTO. Our PTO was just formed last year, and we are still trying to get organized, by laws, etc. The PTO was told last year one of their functions was to provide teacher Christmas Bonus's. We were told that this was a function the old teachers auxillary performed before they disbanded. My question is this. "Is this a normal function of a lot of PTOs?" I am new to all this but I (and several others elected to the board this year), felt that this was something that perhaps should be coming from somewhere else. Say the general fund perhaps? Don't get me wrong, we all feel our teachers should get a bonus and we will take this on if necessary, but I was just wondering, is this the norm?
Any enlightenment on this would be appreciated!
By the way, we are a private school, grades K4-12. Appx enrollment 290. 34 total personnel to provide a bonus for. (Just in case this makes a difference!)
Thanks!
