We don't have any sort of ceremony, just basically "change the guard" at the last Exec meeting. (I asked around to see if they wanted a ceremony or outing, but frankly, with all the other end of the year functions, it was a resounding "no".) But it's nice that your group does something.
The "survival kit" is a popular item and done in a multitude of variations, often as a volunteer gift. (Volunteer survival kit). But you can put all sorts of slants to it and use it different ways, so it's pretty fun. This has come up before under postings about volunteers, and I'm sure some will add. You can use any type of container/bag to hold these items...a small bag tied with a ribbon, a small gift box, etc.
Here's a starter list:

As a new volunteer, here are a few things to help you "survive" the experience!
Toothpick -- to remind you to pick out the good qualities in others.
Rubber band -- to remind you to be flexible, things might not always go the way you want, but it will work out.
Band Aid -- to remind you to heal hurt feelings, yours or someone else's.
Pencil -- Pencil - to remind you to list your blessings everyday.
Eraser -- to remind you that everyone makes mistakes, and it is okay.
Chewing Gum -- to remind you to stick with it, and you can accomplish anything.
Mint -- to remind you that you are worth a mint.
Candy Kiss & Hug -- to remind you that everyone needs a kiss or a hug every day.
Tea Bag -- to remind you to relax daily & count your blessings.
Lifesaver: to remind you of the many times others need your help and you need theirs.
Cotton Ball: for the rough roads ahead; see the cushioned support of your family and friends.
Sweet and Sour Candy: to help you accept and appreciate the differences in others.
Happy Face Sticker: smiling not only increases your face value, it is contagious.
Candle: to remind you to share your light with others.
Anyone with clever ideas for installation program. Ours is a very informal event, a short meeting/installation and then a dinner.
Someone had suggested a 'new president' survival kit (she had seen this done before), but can't remember exactly what went in it or what they represented.
It went along the lines of a rubber band for resiliency, a paper clip to hold it all together... you know, stuff like that.
