I have noticed the samething with our group. Everyone wants to help but DON'T ask them to chair! Then once we do get a chair and they see they just have to keep things organized and report at the meeting all is well! Maybe we should add a job discription to the list of suggestions!--Would someone like to make a motion on this?
1) suggest cancelling the event (and do so if necessary)
2) get a group of volunteers together and a leader will probably emerge. Either someone will volunteer to be "chair" or you take the approach that since no one wants to take that job then the work will be broken up into smaller tasks and you just need a "coordinator". (Which is what should actually be happening in the committee anyway - but you don't have to tell them that.) You or the VP will probably need to stay involved, but try not to actually take over.
If those committees have members, just no chair, have the president or vice president meet with the members to get the ball rolling and then ask for a chair. I did that with our Welcome Committee which is a HUGE undertaking. No one would step forward. But once they realized that the chair mainly was in charge of coordinating and keeping things on track it wasn't a problem.
Start to talk about eliminating the programs..start off with Yearbook 1st--you watch someone who has a kid graduating will pop out of the woodwork once it is known that there will be no yearbook--"WHAT NO YEARBOOK FOR MY KID I DON'T THINK SO!"
We had a neighboring elem PTA who had a budget line oyaok and no one wanted to do it- So finally in December after stating in each month before that a cjair was needed. They put a flyer out with the principal's approval advising that due to know one volunterringto chair and organize the yearbook committee that there would be no yearook for this year. Wouldn't you know by the 1st week of Jan they had someone..The reason for the flyer and announcement at the meeting was so that every parent knew that there would not be a yearbook and no one could say well I did not know no one voluntered, if I did I would have done it- and then the school and PTA would not have to hear about it after the fact.
We had the same problem this past year and the
PTO Board came together and pulled off the activites at the same time we contacted the parents that did want to help in that area. That was our only solution. Yes, it's hard to find parents to committ to chair.
It is the same old story. We have a lot of people who don't mind helping out. However it is sometimes difficult to find chairpeople. Right now we still have openings for Holiday Store, RIF, and Yearbook. The nominating committee has tried vigorously to fill all of the positions. Does anyone have any suggestions?
