The non profit law section covers this. It lists the information you should put on the receipts you give donors. Refer to www.nonprofitlaw.com/fund/gift.shtml
Question-- We are getting ready to do a fundraiser where we simply ask our members for a cash donation. I was told that a thank you with the amount they donated will work as a receipt for tax purposes.....does that sound right?? Do I need to purchase a reciept book?
Hi- What I did was provide the tax ID number on my soliciatation number and most folks used that as there receipt- then I had the children make the thank you note. The fundraising money was going to their playground therefore wanted the thank you to come from them. Many of local businesses proudly displayed the thank you note.
We used a hand-written thank you note for our auction donors, nothing fancy, but you do need include the item they donated (no value - they figure that out)and your PTO's tax id number so the donor has it for their purposes. Keep in mind, that donations to your PTO, even if you have a tax-id number, are not tax deductible for the donor unless your PTO is a 501c3 registered charitable organization.
I know I have seen a post about a thank you letter for tax purposes to send to those who donate, but I can't find it. If you have a letter that you send, would you please either post it or send it to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. I would really appreciate it. I sent out a couple letters from Dottie's list and I have received a gift certificate from Gymboree and and an American Girl Doll. Now I am going to write more letters. Thanks Dottie.
