Our PTO also has two teacher reps, one for the K-6th and the other is from the 7th-12th grades. This year has been a tough year with the hiring of so many new teachers and many were hesitant to get involved with the PTO this year. Next year will be better!--Many are noticing the ones involved tend to be heard and recieve better volunteer help!
Our Executive Board includes the Principal, the Vice Principal, and two teacher reps. The teacher reps are appointed by the principal (with our agreement). We usually try to get one from the lower grades and one from the higher grades. (We are K-5), and they generally serve for the entire school year. Rarely does one of our school reps miss a meeting. They are all very involved and truly assets. The role of the teacher reps is primarily to be a conduit of information, so we don't expect them to take a big role volunteering for things.
Note - we have a large board of 25-35 members, so 4 school positions aren't out of proportion. t works well for us.
Teacher reps are the way to go if you are having trouble getting teachers to attend. I think our teachers had the best idea though. Each month, one teacher from each grade comes to the meeting. That way, they always have someone there that deals specifically with their grade and it's respective interests. One teacher for the school can be a problem when a different teacher needs something from PTO. Our way, we see each of the teachers at some point, and they always have someone with their point(s) of view. Anyway you slice it, it is a great idea, less taxing on the teachers and staff. Ours is just another way to go on the Teacher Rep idea.
Hi! We have always had just one teacher representative. The teachers vote at the beginning of the year as to who it is going to be. We had the same teacher since I have been at this school.Although we do have a back up in case she can't make it. They show up at the meetings and basically write a condensed version for the other teachers and puts them in mailboxes the next day. You should have your teachers vote or at least come up with one person who is willing to come to most of the meetings. Then the teachers will know who to come to to voice their opinions at the meetings.
whats everyone's thoughts about creating a position on the PTO board for a teacher representative?
As of now we just have different teacher representative that come to the monthly meetings.
