PTO - How to deal with an autocratic principal

22 years 8 months ago #95920 by VNasch
Hey Girls, I was browsing the PTO today topics and ran into yours. Im new at this computer stuff so I hope this finds you. I have been active for 5 years as a volunteer and on the board for 3years, 2 years secretary, 1 as president. This much I have learned. On the ratings scale of importance, you would have thought PTO is at least NO 3 behind your principal and staff. But alas we are somewhere near the bottom. For all that we have done and accomplished and fundraised, we should be praised and feel triumphant. Quick question here, Do you give your principal, staff and students any of your monies from your fundraising efforts? If yes, why is he nixxing your continuing efforts? Or better yet saying "not a good idea", on the simplist events? Talk to him/her. All that hard work you are willing to go through to the end result will definely pay off. Get your volunteers to rally and support all your ideas, gather names contact phone numbers and budget information to present to them. All those dotted I's and crossed T's make the difference! Have I had problems with my principal, OH YEAH! But the big question is, why won't they support their own school and those student's and parent's who want more fun, more commrodery(sp)and more PTO participation? Start small and always plan ahead with your homework done. I hope my advice works!

Being relatively new, I haven't had the opportunity to be 'nice' to the principal. However someone I know pretty well has tried being 'nice' to no avail. While I haven't heard both sides of the story, I have no reason to believe my fellow parent isn't being truthful.

My only ace in the hole, is that the principal doesn't know my allegences, or alliances as of yet. I am trying to covertly help out in getting out PTO back in the hands of the parents/teachers.

Thanks for your reply

I have been trying to treat my principal with nothing but niceness. Oh, I'm sorry, You are right, I was wondering if you would consider.... The last has gotten me the furthest. If you get any other ideas let me know believe me I need them too!!!

I am new to the PTO thing, but the control I've seen our K-8 principal have over our PTO is almost tyranny. From what I am told by others with my principles, it is difficult to get past this individual without a threat of disbanding the PTO.

How does a principal gets such power?

Better yet, how does one get the PTO back in the hands of the parents and teachers?
