Our PTA also got "roped" into a few things but it really ended up to be a good thing. We throw better dances than the staff ever did.
We were asked to "do the awards ceremonies" at the end of the year. Three seperate ceremonies that required plenty of work. PTA secured the bakers and refreshments, (about 100 dozen cookies plus one ice cream social) but were never mentioned. The next year when I called a mom to bake she was amazed that PTA provided refreshments since she thought it was a "school function" and just assumed the staff had provided that. It is now mentioned that PTA provides the "receptions".
When the staff dumped the dances in our laps and they became very successful, the next year the staff wanted to know where that money went and could they get a piece of it. Well the membership had voted when they took them over that the profit go straight into the student appreciation and recognition fund. (We did not need the money) Staff was a little put out by that, but still they did not want to take the dances back either.
The school does a book fair twice a year. Though PTA does not see any of the profit or books we are very happy to supply the volunteers to man the sale.
All other groups at the school who raise money do so independently. Many of our schools have not only a parent group but Music Boosters, Academic Boosters, Athletic Boosters etc...
Are the parent upset your group is doing it? Will it be done the same as in the past? I guess I am missing what their problem with it is. (The cultural events at most of our schools are done jointly with the school. The staff really promotes it with the students and parents and the PTA's do all the planning and implementing the program. The outcome is so much better when the staff is a working part of it.

ok, here's the situation, we have a pta and then another group more for achievement purposes. My understanding at the beginning of the year was that these 2 groups were totally separate. (I would think it would be one group, but we won't go there tonight) Anyhow, we are doing a "cultural" event in the spring, which originally was a school run thing, then it was supposed to be a joint school-pta thing. Now it seems to be a total pta thing. (I missed exactly how that happened, which is bad because I am the pres. of the pta.) Anyhow, people are now bent out of shape and have completely different ideas of what should be getting done, how the event should go, etc. I'm not sure what to do at this point. A lot of work has been put into it by someone, and I think that what has been done so far is great. (sorry to ramble here) Our next meeting is in jan and I have a bad feeling that it is going to be ugly. How can I difuse this since really it isn't about the big people it's for the kids. Help! (at the very very least, thanks for letting me vent :> )
