Forourchildren, it sounds to me like you are on the right track. I agree that you need to set your foundation before rushing into anything.
As far as your negative Board member, can you figure out what he/she WANTS to do and try to win them over by focusing their role in that area?
As for the meetings, there are the old standbys: be calm, patient, repeat what they've said with a positive twist (if possible), question them ("now, help me understand what you mean by...").
And the fact is, there really is no pleasing everyone. If those on this Forum didn't learn that lesson before life in the PTO, I think it's been bashed into most of us by now! Good luck!

I am attempting to begin a PTO of a daycare of which we have had three meetings. I feel like the director & owner are pushing for the fundraising to begin so they can begin receiving the benefits, but after reading all I can, there is a lot of groundwork to do with mission stmt, bylaws, etc. We also have a person on the board who tends to be a negative force. How can I tactfully address her without offending, as this is "volunteer". I have also been elected as PTO co-president.
