In the past we have had directoies but it was to much of a hassle if a name and number was listed and one member of the family wanted it and another did not. Also people would get upset if they wanted their name in and it was left out for some reason. Just our thoughts.
Marion has a valid opinion, so you would want to check with your membership about how they would feel. In our case, the directory is overwhelmingly popular. While I see the point about "opting in", it would be logistically more difficult to put together and take many more reminders. This way works for us; however, I do hope to add the step of posting a master - just to give those really concerned one more chance to make sure the information is correct, or absent, in the case of those who don't want it published.
By the way, back to membership, teachers and staff are automatically members without paying (as per our bylaws).
Candall, if you want info on Halloween events, why don't we start a new post since that seems like a new topic? I'll respond if you post something. Maybe under "Free for All" since we don't have a forum for Programs/Events.
I have to say as a parent I would have a major fit about publishing a directory with children's names, addresses and phone numbers. I also think you should not have an "opt out" option (saying you don't want to have your child included) but rather an "opt in" option (yes, you can include my child.)
Similar to Gifford, we have some reference pieces in the front: school calendar, district/school phone numbers, map of the school, list of all faculty, PTO Board, etc.
(We do not include teachers' home phone numbers.) The disclaimer idea's probably a good one. Also, beware - with so many names and constant changes, it's really tough to do this without a single mistake. And some people get quite upset about a missing number, misprinted name, etc. Even worse - one that gets printed that shouldn't. I think next year, I'm going to suggest posting a master in the main hallway for a few days so parents can submit corrections before we go to print.
Also, if you are filing an annual IRS return, be aware that income from directory or newletter advertising is considered "Unrelated Business Income" and may be taxable (if over $1000 worth). So watch keeping track of it.
