where to start

Can you sit down with the retiring president before the end of the year to walk through some of the details? Create a list of questions before the meeting so you don't forget anything. Or maybe you could just give the questions to her -- it sounds like she's pretty task oriented; she might just answer them in writing.

Another source could be the principal. If the principal has been around awhile, she probably knows some of the details you might not be aware of. Either way, you should schedule a meeting with the principal to talk over goals for the coming year.

Finally, don't feel like you need to do everything the way it was done before. Get your new board together and talk about what you would like to accomplish. You can set your own path. As Rose suggests, starting by building involvement and getting more people excited about the school and the PTO is a great start.

Hi New in PTO,

For starters, congratulations to you for stepping up as president! Building or rebuilding a PTO has multiple facets-- different things you can do at the same time to start moving your organization forward. No one piece is overwhelming. It's more matter of taking small steps. As the year is coming to a close, it's a good time to bring volunteer together to talk about goals for next year and what your overall mission is for next year. If you have time, you could plan a casual end-of-year get together for families -- maybe a picnic at school on one of the last days of the year for families. Building community, helping parents and families connect, is so important for your school.

You are in a good spot as you have time to put a plan together for next year. This article is will be a great resource for you:

I have a small problem.... I am on the committee but as a stand in for someone who stepped down. We had the election and I was voted to be president. Our current president is " I can do it faster myself" with that said she will be finished with committee too after the year is up. Our new committee has a starting point but has NO clue what to do. We all know what fundraisers, events, box tops, appreciation days and testing day snacks to buy but that's it :( How can we gain the tools needed for success if we do not have access to all the information?
