Once you have a list of events work out exactly how much you are willing to do and then communicate to both staff and parents that unless you have more help, the following events will be canceled and be prepared to follow through either way. You will need to get together a list of what help you need and where people can help. We also found that an online sign up page for event volunteers was great at both showing where we needed help for an event/program and takes some of the work off the organizer. I wish you the best of luck, but sometimes it is fine to just say no that is too much!
Hi CCpres,
gjcoram makes a good point. It helps to meet with the principal so he or she is clear on how much work you have on your plate. Ask the principal to let the teachers know of all the changes that have taken place and how this year has really been an effort to hold it together/keep things going.
You should have a meeting with the principal and a few teachers and express your frustrations -- can they provide a list of events for the rest of the year? Can you get some T's in the PTO (ie, teacher involvement)?
At the beginning of this year our PTO President changed schools and the rest of the officers moved on to junior high. With noone running things I was asked if I would be President (having not done anything with this PTO the year before). I agreed and got my SIL and a friend to also agree to step onto the board. We have done our best trying to figure out what the previous PTO did and have raised funds and had some really successful events. However, we continually get emails from teachers telling us that PTO always did ___ and that we'll need to run that event which is scheduled for the next week. (they never give us proper notice). The 3 of us have been running everything and can't get any other parents to run things. They'll show up to help at events, but don't want to run them. I have 5 kids with my youngest being 1. I'm burnt out and have decided I will not be President next year. The other 2 on the board said they won't do it if I'm not because they only agreed to do it because I was.
So my question is... what do we do? Do we let the Principal know now that we will not continue next year? Will our PTO disband if we won't keep it going?
