We have one of those, too. Super hard worker, always willing to pitch in and volunteer, BUT, it has come at a cost. She has alienated and offended people to the point that she has actually driven good volunteers away because they do not want to deal with her. She is very controlling and is not a team player, something that has caused serious rifts in the organization. Do not put this person on your board. I don't know that I have any good advice other than don't put her in a position of authority. Maybe if you sit down and talk to her one on one about her style and its affect on others she might see the light. Our problematic volunteer just shrugs her shoulders when told her style is difficult...some people will respond to feedback, others won't. You won't know until you try to discuss it with her. Also, our administrator has been helpful in this regard. Sometimes the principal can help keep a firm hand on people like this.
We have been dealing with a somewhat similar situation. My suggestion is to talk with her one-on-one. I know it's hard. It was definitely not something I was looking forward to. But, if her heart really is in the right place, and you talk to her with kindness, respect and honesty, more than likely, she'll be somewhat receptive. After dealing with a lot of volunteers (not just in PTO, but in another nonprofit I ran), I've learned that most people know their own weaknesses but often don't realize how their actions are affecting others in the group.
The volunteer I was having problems with had absolutely no idea they were having a negative impact on our group. It has taken some time, but things are much better.

Any suggestions on how to handle a volunteer who is hard to work with? She has a heart of gold but others do not want to work with her because she tries to take over and doesn't think the rules apply to her. She wants to be on the board but I do not know where to place her that she won't alienate others or try "take over". We are a small private school with a limited # of dependable volunteers.
