Hi kjsapp,

Did you have the conversation with the principal. Either way, if you are clear that the accounting shows the money is gone, it's time to report the theft to the police.

First, change the code on the safe.

If after that the mom is dumb enough to complain about not being able to get into it, you can ask her why she was trying to get in.

You might also try asking the mom whether she shared the code with anyone else. No matter what she says to that question, it gives you a chance to say something like, "OK, thanks; we're trying to figure out what happened to $150 that seems to be missing from the safe." Her reaction might tell you something.

Good luck!

Incase you want the quick version... i was the last person in the safe, a few days later i find that $150 is missing.
Ok, you can read the details now or you can skip to the bottom where I ask some specific questions about what I should do.

I'm the secretary and also in charge of our weekly ice cream sales.

Me, the secretary, the president, the treasurer, had the code for months... Without any issues in the safe.

1/25 president and I inventoried the safe, we had two separate deposit envelopes both with deposit slips. We rubber banded the envelopes together. We generally do not keep so much cash but our treasurer is having a hard time keeping up.

Fri. 1/25 I could not be there for the ice cream sale so the pres. gave the safe code to a mom that usually helps me. She completed the sale and left the deposit in the safe.

Mon. 1/28 Our safe consisted of 3 separate deposit bags, as it should. I double checked everything and all looked good. I notified the pres.

Fri 2/1 I open the safe and it only has 2, not 3 bags of money, one of the ones that was rubber Andes was completely gone and the other one was missing the deposit slip and 2 20's.

I immediately informed the pres. We had a quick impromptu exec. Board meeting. I wanted to bring the principal into the loop, to get her help but also to cover my but. It seems as though the rest of the board wants to tighten up our security and not cause waves with this mom.

What would you do? I should also mention that I have suspected this mom of taking $48 back in Nov. that's why I had the pres count all the money in the safe before giving her the code, to cover my but. Also, this past Fri she was helping me and was asking me questions like "how often does the treasurer make the deposits" that was completely random.

If I hadn't been suspicious and told the pres and had the money counted I would most likely be the suspect. Im the only person who has knowingly been in the safe that week.

I do not feel comfortable leaving this hush hush. If I cannot talk the board into bring this to the principal should I do it anyway? Or should the PTO remain completely separate? In which case a crime has still been committed.

Thank you in advance for your help.
