I appreciate the response! I have been on your page for the second day straight and am loving all of the content.

I asked for a private meeting with the president as I feel that she just doesnt know any better. She commented several times that if there were ever an issue that SHE would just disolve the board. I am going to respectfully ask for her to review and implement Roberts Rules of Order during our meetings as well as a few other changes which will cover all of our butts .....if she doesnt want to listen, I will bow out gracefully!

Have a great day :)

Wow!

My head is spinning from just reading the list -- I can't imagine what it would have been like to be at the meeting. In all seriousness, though, you have definitely flagged a few things that shouldn't be happening. Because you are new, we can't say why things are happening this way. It could be misunderstandings, lack of knowledge or inexperience of the current board.

Luckily, we have tons of information on this site that should help you.

You can search the site by category. For example, if you want to learn more about bylaws, you can search our short cut "Bylaws'' at the bottom of the page. In that category, we have articles such as:

How to Write Bylaws www.ptotoday.com/pto-today-articles/arti...-to-write-pto-bylaws

10 Key Points About Your Bylaws. www.ptotoday.com/pto-today-articles/arti...-points-about-bylaws

You can also check out our File Exchange, which is really a treasure trove of stuff, much of which has been submitted by parents, that contains templates and other documents to help with bylaws, financials and other group management issues: www.ptotoday.com/pto-today-articles/arti...-points-about-bylaws

Also keep posting questions here as well as on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ptotoday, to engage with other parents.

Good luck!

Help: Elected to a NIEVE board! was created by Lisa
I was elected to a PFO board last week and attended our first meeting yesterday. I have been on several non-profit boards in the past and therefore THINK that the way this board is doing things is wrong (however it may be ME who is wrong).

Here are some issues I found:
the meeting was never called to order,

the president made statements "I want to vote that we....." and no vote was ever taken for anything!

the president made the secretary add to the minutes that "she" was approved as an additional signer of the checks,

I asked for a copy of the by-laws and was told that they are old and out-dated, and that she will work on getting new ones written

there was talk about the former president being charged with a felony for Embezzlement but then in the next sentence she stated that she DOES in fact bring change to fundraising events and will dig into her pockets,

during events, one person is working then transports money to a central location to be counted,

There is not a tracking system for purchases vs merchandise,

the president took notes and the secretary took them to copy for the minutes,

the exec board was not aware of what the non-profit ID was for

the Principal can go to any exec board and ask for money at any time - it isnt brought to a vote, but we will get a text about the check written

I could go on and on - but I seem to be waiving a red flag at joining this board - should I be concerned???

Does anyone have an established meeting minute, treasurers report, by-laws that they would be willing to share? this is my first time with a school and wonder if that is why it is so different than other non-profits that I work with.
