You need to make it easy for them to say yes and then you need to make them feel important and appreciated for what they have done! Brag about their help in an email. Tell your Membership how wonderful they are and make more people want to help and feel appreciated. You do need to give them a realistic idea of what it entails but make sure they know that you will be there to support, help or answer questions.
Leaders need to walk the walk.....not just dole out the work.
Speak plainly. "You've backed out before and we need someone we can count on. We need you to demonstrate your reliability as a team member before assigning you to work on your own or in a leadership capacity."

Any ideas on how to handle volunteers who repeated offer to help, or take on chair positions, only to back out when it comes time to do the work? Do you just decline their offers to help in the future? Do you try to find out why they don't follow through? This is very frustrating!
