Protocols for website/email/social networking site

Do you think it would work to post updates to your website and then promote that site via your blog, facebook, twitter and as a tag on to the principals email list and school newsletters? It seems that method would get the word out pretty well on your updates.

Most schools are stuggling with this. Try to remember that people want to be informed and updated but be careful of information overload. We've got a policy at our school of only one email blast per week. This forces committee chairs to plan ahead and also gives us a consistent message. Also, make sure only a few people can send email.

The social media / facebook can get tricky. I've heard parents say that they're just looking for information, not a friend! Some of the boards can turn into a complaining session if you're not careful. Again, control who has access.

Regarding the website, again, consistent updates are important. Set an expectation that it will be updated every 2 weeks. As with the email, this makes the committees plan ahead.

Publish a schedule for updates and email that everyone knows about. This really helps as well.

We use our FaceBook page as a regular way to communicate with our parents and student "friends". Our school resource officer is one of our friends and helps monitor all acitivities. The page master is also responsible, since outside communications cannot be controlled, if inappropriate materials show up on the school FB page they are deleted or hidden. We have posted a disclaimer on the main page indicating that we shall have the right to remove any inappropriate materials. When a friend request comes in and they may not be known, they are asked for their homeroom teacher and grade. A parent will identify their child's information and who they are. Posts are limited to PTSA materials only, nothing personal. Although our school participated in Farmville for a brief time since it helped ensure that the kids are connecting and communicating with us. We use FB to invite parents and students to school-related events and programs. Next year we will be promoting it stronger as a way to go "green" and not take the time and expense required to send flyers home as a form of communication. Just remember that even though posts are typically made from volunteers, you are always reflecting the school's values.

I am interested to know if groups have protocols for their members to use/manage websites, emails and social networking sites such as Facebook & Twitter. We have a website, gmail address, and Facebook page (sort of). As I am drafting procedures for our committee chairs, program coordinators & volunteers, I would like to include something on these topics but I'm not sure where to begin. Thanks.
