Can a relatively intelligent, non-CPA type person adequately fill out the 990 form?

Yes, you CAN fill it out. It can be intense at times trying to figure out the IRS lingo and getting together supporting documents. But it's not that bad if you just plug away at it. Search the forums for key word 501 or 1023. There is a lot posted here in the forums. And come back and post questions.

Note, when you look at old postings be aware that the form changed a couple years ago (maybe 2006? it probably says on your 1023). Anyway, most of the information collected and the spirit of the form is the same, but older posts may not have the same line number references.

Good luck.

Geez, I can't believe I'm back already!

In the stack of stuff the outgoing prez handed me, is a letter from the IRS - our 990/990-EZ hasn't been filed, and I have 'til 5/21/08 to get it in. (yep, I know that was a couple days ago.)
-- outgoing treasurer didn't know we were s'posed to do this, and previous, previous treasurer has moved and left no copies of any reports filed --

I have the IRS form/booklet (also, in my stack of "Here, you take care of this!) and it looks pretty daunting...

We're not required to have an accountant fill this out, and there would be no legal reason for me not to attempt this, right? -- (other than the fact that it's about to be Memorial Day weekend, and it'll probably take me all 3 days to wade through this!!)

Advice please!!
and, I gotta say, I'm so grateful to y'all!
