Here is a link to a lengthy discussion about chartering a scout troop. There is a lot of good info in it.

Most scout troops should run under their own EIN number or the Boy scouts of america's district number-- we are not allowed to sponsor cub scouts any longer through the school- we can support them -- but they have to be sponsored by the parents-- this has to do with the scouting regulations-- not our schools--
Most troops far under their districts national accounts- they open their own bank account with 2 of their people on the account-- this is not connected to the school at all- I would check with their district leaders as to the policy in their area.

Our PTO has been asked to sponsor two Boy Scout troops. The district Boy Scout administrator wants us to give them our EIN so they can open their troop bank accounts. We think this is unwise for many reasons. Does anyone have experience sponsoring boy scout troops?
