Hmm ... it occurred to me after I typed the above that I could make two categories in Quicken, one for "Gift wrap income" and another for "Gift wrap expenses", so that I could track gross receipts (and any bounced checks would be negative numbers in income, so they don't count as gross receipts).
The nuisance would be that Quicken likes to group all income categories together and all expense categories together, making it a little harder to find the net for reporting to the members (who don't care about gross, only net).
Anyone have recommendations for software for PTOs?
Two deficiencies I've noticed with Quicken, when used for PTOs (or, probably, any non-profit):
1) I can't see how to get "gross receipts" for the IRS, meaning the $8000 brought in with gift-wrap sales, not the $4000 you netted after paying for the wrap itself -- other than exporting the data to Excel and separating income from expenses
2) I don't know how to account for "gifts" -- all those things the local merchants donated to our raffle/auction that don't get deposited like the checks & cash Quicken knows how to handle.
