Bringing a new treasurer on smoothly

17 years 1 month ago #137537 by dlf
Do you do background checks on all your board? It would seem very discriminatory if you are singling this person out. Good safeguards (2 signatures, audits, receipts, monthly review of the check book, online access by more than the treasurer) are probably just as effective. Frankly-any of our treasurers could probably rip off money if they wanted too (even in the corporate world for that matter)...but the intent is to make it as safe as possible and still be a functioning entity.

We just elected a new treasurer.

Last year's treasurer did a great job, but this being her last year at the school, she wanted to get someone new off to a good start.

I just met the new person for the first time at the last PTO meeting at which she was elected. This leaves me with some insecurity just because I don't know the person. We'll be handing over a checkbook with over $1000 in the account.

I've thought, maybe we ought to have the school run a background check.

Does anybody have an example of a process they have used in the past for getting off to a good start with a new "unknown" Treasurer?
