PTA Officer and child in another school district

That's just plain weird to me. Why would she want to commit so much time and energy to your school? Can your principal talk to her? Would that help? Whether she stays or goes, you should approve an amendment to your bylaws that clearly defines who can be a member/officer. I'm not affiliated with PTA, so I don't know their rules. But in our PTO, you must have a child enrolled at the school or be a teacher at the school to be a member, and only members can be officers.

Our bylaws are based on a bylaws template put together by the Wisconsin PTA.

Under the bylaws in the absence of the president the vice president assumes the duties of the president (but does not become president). There is nothing in the bylaws regarding situations in which an officer does not have a child in the school.

The person involved does not have the best interest of the school at heart. If she did she would simply resign her position and we would fill the position(s) with special elections.

Are your bylaws online or can you copy in some of the text? I can't believe your bylaws don't deal with this at all.

What are the criteria for being a member? An officer?

Assuming there's no recourse there, can you talk to her? Explain that the group feels it would be better to have someone involved in the day to day activities of the school. Perhaps you could offer her a board position if she really wants the learning experience. Although, frankly - I think she'll just fade away.

In June 2007 our PTA vice president became acting PTA president due to no one running to replace the departing president.

The vice president has now informed us that her daughter is no longer going to attend our school and has her enrolled in the school district the family is moving too. She claims that according to the by-laws she takes over president duties and she fully intends to be president for one school year and than resign. The by-laws say nothing in regards to taking over as president without a vote and say nothing in regards to having a child in school or the same school district. The State PTA is backing her in her claims.

The concern I and the more active parents have is that she will not run the PTA with her heart. The position of PTA is demanding and is not to be taken lightly. She is simply going to use us as training grounds so she can move into a PTA officer's position immediately in her child's new school. We are also concerned about how it will look to other parents that want to get involved in PTA when they learn the PTA president's daughter goes to school in another district.

The active core of the PTA have said that if the State forces us to accept this situation they will simply stop active involvement in the PTA. Many PTA functions will cease to go on as in previous years. We are looking for advise. Has anyone else encountered this in their PTA/PTO, and if so, how have you dealt with it. If not, what suggestions would you make to deal with this? If this is not clear let me know and I will attempt to clarify.
