I live on a small island in the Caribbean. I have spend the last year working to organize a parent/teacher group in our very small private school. The administration hadn't even heard of PTO until I introduced the concept.I met with the administration and owners of the school and obtained permission to do so. At the meeting, I spoke English, both the administrator and owner understood me and responded in both English and Spanish.
Now, the school is technically "Bilingual". However.... I am the minority and have to translate written letters, posters ect into Spanish for the parents and staff. This is time consuming for me as it is not my first language. My question is... I would like to speak in my native language at the meetings without stepping on toes or alienating anyone. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
