Section 2 – Eligibility Eligible candidates shall be defined as those who have a child/ward attending the District XYZ schools.
Section 3 - Term Length Officers shall be elected before the June PTO Board meeting for a term of one year commencing July 1.
Section 4 - Term Restrictions No officer may be eligible for the same position for more than three consecutive years. No person may serve as an officer on the Board for more than five consecutive years.
Section 5 – Removal Any officer or agent, such as a committee chair, may be removed by the Board whenever in its judgment the best interests of the PTO would be served thereby. The method of removal shall be by 2/3 vote at a regular or properly called meeting at which a quorum is present.
The five years max as a board member helps keep people from just rotating through the board positions, locking everyone else out. The removal clause helps so that you aren't even stuck for one year if someone is just doing a really lousy job.
Some people have contradictory bylaws by having a two year term limit but then saying you have to have a child/ward enrolled. If their child only has one year left in the school they can't fulfill that second year obligation . Or they might argue that they were elected for a two year term and should get to finish it even if their child is no longer enrolled. I think allowing for a one year term in such inistances would be helpful. I'm not sure exactly how something like that would be worded but it's something to consider.
And like WFS and beignets say, it's good to have a backup clause for extending term limits if no other candidate is available.

All our executive officers must be elected in every year. The maximume time allowed in office of the same position is two years. However, if they are unopposed, they can hold the same office for a third year. By having the officers need election every year, it makes sure that if someone is doing a bad job, they can be removed by having a person run against them. If a person is doing a good job, no one will run against them during their 2nd year & maybe not their 3rd either. Don't make the limit too high because you may have people in there that you can't get rid of.

I need to know what is the basic term limits are for officers. Our bylaws don't really state how many years an officer can stay in that particular seat and we were going to amend them to state how much and how long?
