I attend PTO meetings, but am not a board member. Recently we had to decide how to allocate some extra funds (crazy right??) and each person in attendance had a vote, Board member or not. The idea was put on the table, it was discussed, a motion was made, a second and then a Yea and Nay vote.

Good PTOs are Inclusive, not Exclusive. There is no way that just 2 people should be making all of the decisions ... unless of course you home school and those two people are yourself and your spouse! :)

As President of my PTO, I try so hard to make sure that no one thinks that I am making ANY decision without input from my other board members & PTO members, where appropriate. You can't always have everyone's input and there are times that decisions have to be made by the board. However, the board should try and get input anytime it's at all possible so that when those situations come up, you have a better idea of what they would want.
Voting on things keeps everyone feeling that they are a part of the organization and that its not run by one person or a couple of people. Read your bylaws to find out how money decisions are to be made. It may give you an indication of what should be voted on and what doesn't have to. But to increase your volunteers and get more parent participation, its always best to bring as many in the process as possible when something is under consideration.

I agree with Perusing. You should talk to the rest of the Board members to get their input and then when talking with the president, refer to their thoughts and ideas. Maybe she'll eventually get the idea that one way or another they are going to be included and give up on the power trip.

Same thing as Shawn, we can't make any final decisions with out voting. Any ideas we have to try soemthing new, make a change in a fundraiser etc. we do it as a group. We are a whole and we all work toghether. In the end we are all working together to help the teachers and enrich our children's education. I think maybe the "power hoger" may have lost sight of that!!

RRO

We have to make a motion (ie to have Family event) Its 2nd and discussed then voted on

All board members should be able to vote IMO - 1 vote per person (but it really depends on bylaws)

Why have board members if their input and votes arent used??
