Charter School consolidation

I'd encourage you to work with the whole school. You still feel like two separate entities right now, but that will fade over time.

If you do want to stay with only that target group, I'd encourage you to have a name that reflects that segment and not generically XYZ School PTO.

You'll also need a explanation for not including the rest. And it may be justified. For instance the secondary level may have band and athletic boosters as well as a myriad of clubs and simply not need the PTO support.

Note, I'm not sure that's true as the PTO at the secondary level tends to bridge the gaps between those other organizations. In our secondary schools, the PTO/PTA is smaller and tends to focus on some central areas like Teacher Appreciation. Who will do that for the higher grades at your school?

The are no National PTO rules. No national anything. PTO's are their own entity of Parents nad Teachers (and other members)

Not sure how it would affect your nonprofit status on covering half the schools stakeholders though. What do your bylaws say? Since its been voted on by the current? PTO members I dont see how the school can force you to. They can make life difficult since 6-12 are being exluded.

I would discuss with Principal and his superiors about what the parents want and whether a 6-12 PTO is needed

and tell the Administrator to do some research, too, (nothings worse than policy with no data, research or backup to it) before he makes statements about things he evidently knows nothing about,(but in a kinder, gentler manner)

HI,
We are at a charter school, that consollidated at the end of the school year last year from the high school and elementary, two seperate entities into one. This year they want the PTO to cover the whole school, which would encompass k-12. As a board we feel it's way to much work to meet the needs of the kindergarteners through 12th graders!!

We voted as a board, and then at a meeting, with all the parents, to only work on the elementary side. Which is what the PTO did last year.

I was told by an administrator today that it might be against the national PTO rules or regulations to only cover half the school. Please let me know if we are breaking any rules or regs.
