Tammy - Congratulations! Presiding over a parent group is a wonderful experience. Your group must think very highly of you to have chosen you.
The first thing I'd do is have a meeting with the outgoing and incoming officers. Outgoing officers should have binders to pass on. If possible, include the principal as you'll want to spend some time at the meeting discussing the main projects and timeline for the coming year.
Specifically, make sure you have the most recent version of your bylaws. They should be very clear about the role and responsibilities of the president.
One of the first things I did was start my own binder. It included the following sections:
Calendar: Using At-A-Glance Quick Notes Monthly Planner, I filled each month with the school calendar, key dates of PTO events and tentative monthly meeting dates.
Board: A list of voting members including Name, Title, Email Address, Mailing Address and Phone #.
Bylaws: Keep your most recent copy in the binder. You'll find yourself referring to them often!
General Info: Copies of General Guidelines, staff list, enrollment #s, class list, school map, tax ID letter, student handbook.

hello, I just found out I made President for next year and a little worried. They told me I was picked because for events I helped plan this year for the school. I was wondering what else does the President do?
