Wait a sec - don't just go by the EIN of the bank account. It may be the districts EIN, but you may not have permission to use it.
Our group was in that situation a few years ago. Someone used the City's EIN to establish the account and all was well for a few years. Then the City decised to crack down on improper use of the number and we were forced to get our own EIN to change the signature cards for a new Exec Bd. That problem kick-started us down the path to 501c3, so it all ended up all right.
My point is that you will need more that the EIN at the bank to determine if you are an official Non-Profit.
if the EIN of your bank account (the 'SSN' or tax ID #, the one you use to file taxes every yr for the PTO monies) is the same as that of district, then you are under the umbrella of the school. if its not a district EIN, then you are independent and you might be or might not be, 501c3
you should be able to call the 1 800 number for the IRS and with your EIN, they can tell you if you are 501c3 or not.
I was elected as the new PTO Pres this year and had a great year. I spent a lot of time ivestigating diff. things, as I am brand new to the area, and state. I can not find anywhere if we have 501C status. I have gone through school books, spoken with the principal, gone to the bank and looked at old acct. records and talked to several people at the board office. Can someone suggest to me how I might find out if we have it?
