We keep $1500.00- 2000.00 for the start of the next school year. We try to use most of our funds for all our events, things for the school etc. I just asked our principal if there was anything that the school has been looking into getting that the school budget wouldn't able to get. Last year we replaced our school risers for the stage that were over 40 years old.
Our belief for the carry over of funds is that it should be used on the children that raised the funds its not fair to save the funds for a class that hasnt even fund raised.
Unless you have a specific project a few years back our school did our playground.

I am the treasurer of our PTO. Our school never even has $6000.00 per year. We only have 121 kids enrolled in a K-5 elementary.
2 year ago when I started this volunteer position, I discovered that the previous treasurer had embezzled $25,000 over a period of 4 years. We spent a year going to court, she was ordered to spend a month in jail over last summer and is currently on probation, and ordered to pay restitution.
We have two accounts, one for regular funds and one for restitution funds.
Currently we will end this school year with approx $2,700. At our last board meeting on Tuesday a request was shot down by 2 PTO members for $300 for the last day of school for our 5th graders. (They have a small reception, picnic lunch and memento). Instead of voting on the item as it was presented on the agenda "we" the board were bullied and changed what we were to approve. It was approved at $180. Which is $10 per child. Previous years when they had no money because the treasurer was stealing it the last day of school for 5th grade students only garnered about $80.00. We did a breakdown of the costs for the day and they actually come to $421.00. So many parents were going to be asked to donate items and/or money. Well, the new amount was put to a vote. Many sat out. But others pushed it thru.
Well, the next day many people were so hot over this, that they want a special meeting called to do a ballot.
Two years ago when we started and discovered the theft, we started with $600. It was hard but we did it. My concern about carrying money forward is that this is the money we raised this year. My ds is in 5th grade, if we don't spend it this year, he will never see any of it put to use.
I think fundraising is a waste of money, if you can't use any of it so the parents are always having to give, give, give.
