Oh yes--if you make over $25,000 you do have to file taxes. Even if you make under $25,000 you should submit & sign a blank form (fill out the top portion, but leave the financial stuff blank). If your organization makes under $100,000 you can file the 990EZ.
You said this is your second year of being a "legitimate" organization, so I am assuming you received a letter of exemption from the IRS. You probably were given an "Advanced Ruling," and the letter should show when the Advanced Ruling expires. We're only a couple of years old and ours expires in 2009. During the advanced ruling period, you can consider yourself "on probation," so it is VERY important you file returns with the IRS. At the end of the advanced ruling period, the IRS will let you know of your status.
Our school year began July 1, 2005 and ends June 30, 2006. So our taxes for this year will be due by Nov. 15, 2006. We pay a CPA to prepare our taxes (he charges $500).
We have recently been advised that we must file taxes, as a non-profit organization. This is our second year of being a legitimate organization, and I was wondering if anyone else is filing taxes too.
