I've belonged to two PTO's both of whom are incorporated primarily for officer liability protection. In our state (Mi) is costs $20, plus $20 per year renewal. The application is fairly straightforward, though we had to be certain to include a couple of clauses in our Articles of Incorporation that the state doesnt require, but are required by the IRS for 501c3.
Our registered agent is our principal, and our address is the school's so our annual renewal form comes to our attention, via the principal at the school. No big deal.
Our PTO is also incorporated for the same reason - liability issues. When we registered as a business entity in NJ (which had to be done anyway) we chose to be a non-profit corporation. The cost was $75.
We are incoporated, the main reason we did it was liability/protection reasons, it is also better to incorporate before getting your 501 c status, is can be costly to do it the other way! We paid about 75 dollars to be incorporated.

Hi all. I wanted to do a quick survey and ask how many groups out there are incorporated? If you are how does it work and how do things run for you. If aren't incorporated and have thought about being then decided not to, why? Our distric treasurer is having a meeting to discuss incorporating the pto's at our 3 elementarties, intermediate, jr high, and high school. I would just like to hear some opinions and thoughts on the matter.
