Misuse of PTO property

19 years 2 months ago #102355 by ScottMom#1
I would ask her to pay a rental/usage fee. And inform her that she needs group approval to use group equipment in the future or you will assume she has stolen it and press charges. So, I've had some bad experience with this and am still a little bitter.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

I think it is very reasonable to request that pto equipment is used only for pto/school events and by people who are trained in using them. I know the costs of some of these machines are very high and I would be very upset as a parent to know that people use them outside of school if my child helped raised the money for them.

Personally, I think it's a little bold to ask to borrow things like this. And once you start loaning out, the word spreads quickly (personal experience here).

We faced questions of who would pay damages for wrecked equip. And liability (like injury from a hot popcorn machine, etc.) Bottom line--we don't loan out things anymore.

It may be hard to tell someone "NO", but just explain it must be that way. This is equipment your org. worked hard to purchase. Or take a diff. route and say "group decision, that is always a good way to ease out of a tight spot. Good luck.

Is it reasonable to request that members do not use PTO equipment(ex. sno-cone machine, popcorn machine, digital camera) outside of the school for a non PTO sponsored event. In our case a parent is using equipment to sell sno-cones and popcorn at sporting events to raise money for her daughter to be homecoming queen (this sporting event is not affiliated with our school) When PTO pres asked for her to return the equipment she was very mad. Currently there isn't anything in our bylaws that address this. Would a resolution drafted by the executive board and adopted by the PTO members making rules for use of PTO property be the way to go. Appreciate help and guidance on this.
