By calling the state you can find out if you are exempt from having to pay sales tax or state taxes, but they probably won't be able to tell you whether you are exempt from filing Federal taxes.
Call the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Hotline 1-877-829-5500; if you give them your EIN (like a social security number for organizations/companies) they can tell you whether you are exempt from filing Federal taxes. They can also tell you what forms you need to file to become an exempt organizations. JHB has also written a number of good posts on this topic; might want to search through some of her postings.

You can fill out the form online and get approval within 48 hours in most cases. It was very easy.
The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

Check your state's website. Go to the nonprofit section, and you should find either the forms that you can download or information on who to contact. If you aren't filing a return, then you probably aren't tax exempt.
How do we become tax exempt? What forms do I need to fill out? Where do I get them? Or how do I find out if we are tax exempt? The principal and former president aren't sure if we are.
